This week several important events are taking place in Tunis.

One is World Social Forum, which has lost long time ago its fame as the world’ unique gathering space for progressive, horizontal, democratic, left social movements; a movement of movements or network of networks. It has become a carnival or fair for well funded and coopted NGOs, or touristic activity for the NGO cadre and hence subjected to criticisms coming from many social movement activists or advocacy groups that are engaging in real struggles on the ground, like ours, from around the world. In the absence of similar space, for the world-gathering of people’s grassroots struggles, two years ago, in 2013 the WSF was organized in Tunis for the first time; since Tunis has become a symbol of the new wave of mass uprisings started in 2011. This year as the second time WSF planned to take place in Tunis…

“We are here not only to commonify the disciplinary education and
liberate knowledge commons and the labour of the knowledge workers, but to turn the entire model upside down and inside out and replace globally with emancipatory knowledge production and socialisation apparatus designed by and for the producing classes.”

The head office of the University of Amsterdam is under occupation and the occupation has become a workshop for building new models

Support and stand in solidarity with this critical and historical
occupation and the resistance of the Dutch and international students,
who are being over exploited in the ‘market’ while they are programmed
to be exploited more as future labour force. Their resistance and
efforts to build liberated future models at the occupied Maagdenhuis,
the head office of the largest university-industrial complex in the
Netherlands, the sinking last welfare state, deserve massive support
from the academic knowledge workers, as well as unions, labour
activists from around the world.

A New Alignment of Movements? Strategies for a Convergence of Movements | Report by Pat Conaty and David Boiller

Can we build a Co-opting Proof, Collaborative, and Cooperative, one big Commons Movement? | On the report by David Boiller and Pat Conaty

Social Network Unionism

The below report is written by Pat Conaty and David Bollier. It resonates very much with the discussion we have been trying to catalyze at the Networked Labour e-list, therefore is much welcomed. It is the second part succeeding the Open-Cooperatives report recently circulated and published on Commons Transition website. Reading both reports through one gains very important insights about how new movements are evolving and what would one can do to link these movements around ‘hypothesis of the Commons’, as one big transition movement.

One systematic problem of the overall vision is that it is drawn from a higher level, then thr commons ground occupied by the grassroots movements. For instance, the links are thought to be built by the expert communities of interlockers, who are most of the time to be funded and act as professional cadre, who would most probably tend to play the self-reclaimed role of professional…
